Creato dall’artista Zhen Shi, “Memories of Things Past” (Ricordi dal passato) è un progetto documentaristico fittizio sui labirinti della narrazione, il cui scopo e quello di rintracciare le storie contenute in un diario di famiglia belga del XIX secolo trovato per caso. Il progetto, una trilogia a lungo termine, parte dalla volontà di Zhen di ripercorrere gli archivi della famiglia dal punto di vista di un’estranea, seguita da una serie di coincidenze e una tragedia che la coinvolgono nella storia della famiglia. Unendo testo, immagini, corrispondenza, registrazioni telefoniche, materiale d'archivio, libro d'artista e altri media nella sua presentazione, invita il pubblico a esplorare la relazione tra realtà e memoria attraverso la sua narrazione

Zhen Shi (1989, Shandong, Cina) utilizza diversi media e un processo che unisce fotografia, oggetto libro e una storia documentaristica fittizia per costruire un labirinto narrativo. Attraverso la sua manipolazione artificiale delle esperienze vissute dagli personaggi e i suoi interventi nei lasciti intellettuali quali letteratura, materiale d’archivio, teatro e film, il lavoro di Shi prova ad esplorare la complessa relazione tra realtà e memoria, rispettando la tesi generale “archivio e finzione” / “privato e pubblico”. Negli ambienti autoreferenziali che costruisce, vengono esposti aspetti sisifei, ma al tempo stesso poetici e cotonati del concetto di mondo interiore. L’opera di Shi cerca anche di sviluppare un discorso su come il tempo esista e scompaia silenziosamente dal suo contesto storico, continuando ad adattarsi al cambiamento dell'esistenza.

“Memories of Things Past” is a fiction-documentary project about mazes in the narrative created by artist Zhen Shi who traces down stories behind an accidentally-found 19th century Belgian family diary. As a long-term trilogy work, the project starts from Zhen's retracing of the family's archives as an outsider, followed by a series of coincidences and a tragedy that get herself involved in the history of the family. Combining text, image, correspondence, telephone record, archival material, artist’s book and other media in its presentation, she invites the audience to explore the relationship between reality and memory through her story-telling.

Zhen SHI (b. 1989, Shandong, China) employs various mediums and a process that combined photography, book object and fiction-documentary story to construct a maze of narratology. Through her artificial manipulation on individuals' lived experiences and intervention in intellectual legacies such as literature, archival material, theatre and film, Shi's practice attempts to explore the complex relationship between reality and memory under the general proposition “Archive and Fiction” / “Private and Public”. In the self-referential environments that she constructs, Sisyphean, but poetic as well as cottony aspects of the concept of inner world are exposed. Shi's practice also seeks to develop a discourse on how time exists and disappears in a soundless way from its historical context continues to adapt to changing existence.

Zhen Shi currently lives and works in Paris. Shi has recently shown at Zhejiang Art Museum, Hangzhou (2019), OCAT Institute, Beijing (2019); Lianzhou Foto Festival, Canton (2018); national museum OCAT Shanghai and Shenzhen (2017&2018); Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, Beijing (2018); Festival La Gacilly, France (2017); Festival Circulation(s), Paris (2017), Espace Emergency, Vevey (2017), and Art book in China, Shanghai (2016) etc. Shi Zhen was also the Prizewinner of Emerging Gallery in Festival Photo La Gacilly (France, 2017), nominated for Foam Paul Huf Award (Netherlands, 2019) and for Mack First Book Award (UK, 2016).
