Two years ago, we met here in the Valley. We shared conversa- tions, shy smiles, cheap beers, and what would afterwards be the first of a long list of kisses. We met by coincidence, but it hap- pened in such an environment where it was impossible not to get to know and eventually love each other. Coming from two differ- ent Cantons and living in two different countries, this place gave us a platform for exchange and togetherness. The next day, with a slight hangover - we drove home together and never left each other’s side. Although physically living in two different places, we managed to keep the initial connection found here. Now, two years later, we decided to move in together - or at least to give it a try. But first we decided to experiment what it would be like by living here for 50 days.

One Bed, Two Blankets is the first artistic collaboration between Sabine Hess and Nicolas Polli, as well as the result of an artistic residency in the Verzasca Valley. An opportunity that served as a background to test the idea of living together for the first time, by returning to the place where they first met.

In a humorous and experimental way, the two artists play with norms and ideas surrounding their perception of a “relationship”, giving themselves the freedom to create a vulnerable body of work. Embedded in the surroundings of the Verzasca Valley, they confront both the human and creative aspects of living together as a couple.

With open walls and without a roof, the exhibition space resem- bles a DIY house, built by Sabine and Nicolas themselves. They invite the visitor to enter their new home: A place that, similarly to their relationship, is still in transforming and adapting. A selection of texts hangs on the walls of the “home”- they are the artists’ reflections on the challenges experienced during their days in residency. All 68 Rules are part of a limited art edition book: A set of rules of how to navigate life as a couple, but also a personal manifesto of how to grow and learn from each other.

Due anni fa, ci siamo conosciuti qui nella valle. Condividendo chiacchierate, timidi sorrisi, birrette, e verso la fine, siamo arrivati addirittura a qualche bacio ubriaco, i primi ma non gli ultimi. È stata una coincidenza il nostro incontro, supportata da una situa- zione e da un luogo idilliaco, che potevano unicamente creare le fondamenta di quello che poi si è trasformato in amore. Venendo da due diversi cantoni, e vivendo in due diverse nazioni, la Verza- sca è stata la piattaforma ideale per un’opportunità importante. L’indomani ci siamo riavviati assieme, per poi mai lasciarci. Ora, due anni più tardi, abbiamo deciso di vivere assieme, o almeno ci proveremo, dandoci una prima possibilità di sperimentare la con- vivenza qui a Sonogno.

One bed, two blankets (trad. un letto, due coperte) è la prima collaborazione artistica fra Sabine Hess e Nicolas Polli, come anche il risultato di una residenza artistica in valle Verzasca. Un esperimento di vita, la possibilità di convivere per la prima volta, tornando per altro nel luogo del loro primo incontro.

Attraverso satira e sperimentazione, i due artisti giocano con norme e idee che accompagnano la percezione di una relazione sia globale che personale, dandosi la libertà di presentare e pre- sentarsi in un lavoro a più sfaccettature e spesso vulnerabile. In valle Verzasca, Hess e Polli utilizzano loro stessi e il loro quotidia- no per creare aspetti della loro vita insieme come coppia.

Con mura aperte e ancora senza un tetto, l’esposizione vuole essere una casa in costruzione, un’autoproduzione di Sabine e Nicolas. Un po’ come il loro rapporto, gli spettatori potranno os- servare e scoprire un luogo non finito e in continuo adattamento. Oltre alle numerose immagini, si possono trovare piccole riflessio- ni quotidiane per il quieto vivere, regole e appunti imparati durante i loro giorni in residenza. Un complessivo di 68 regole sono state compilate in seguito in un piccolo libro.

Sabine Hess & Nicolas Polli

(ENG) Sabine Hess (1994) is a Swiss photographer. Her photographic practice centers around intimate narratives and notions of home, belonging, loss, and memory. Her first book You Felt the Roots Grow was published by Ciao Press and Witty Books in 2023.
Nicolas Polli was born in Brusino Arsizio, Switzerland in 1989. He is currently the resident at Atelier Robert in Biel.

Il suo primo libro, You Felt the Roots Grow, è stato selezionato per lo “Star Photobook Dummy Award” e pubblicato da Ciao Press e Witty Books.
Nicolas Polli è nato a Brusino Arsizio, Svizzera, nel 1989. È attual- mente l’artista in residenza all’Atelier Robert a Bienne.
