Legends, similarly as myths and tales, take their origins from the marvelous. These stories of oral tradition speak of figures and events that are beyond human dimension, which origins are the religious, the heroic and the fan- tastic that give birth to a new territory. The invisible and imaginary worlds of these stories offer answers to what is beyond human reach and give some sort of significance to the intangible and the unknown, thus making it possible for mankind to bear the unbearable – the wilderness of nature, our terrors, our finitude, etc.

Great fears are originated by what can neither be un- derstood nor seen; nighttime, for instance, has always been a mystery land filled with devilish anxiety, extraordinary creatures and events. Not only darkness prevents us from clearly perceive the essence of things, but it disrupts all evidences. The comforting virtues of the legends soothe our daily lives and help us bear and accept the troubles and mysteries of human condition.

As a native of Camorino, I chose to treat this theme during my residency in Valle Verzasca to better understand my Ticino’s origins. I let myself be surprised and embraced by the valley in order to try to perceive its peculiarities. In my opinion, be it real or fictional, history is what enables us to understand who we are and where we come from. I believe legends are the roots of oral tradition, which is an integral part of our culture. Along with myths and tales, legends speak of beliefs, fears and hopes of the natives.

I walked in empty churches, in the sometimes rude and wild nature; I have re-created my photo studio in various museums of the Canton as well as in my room at Frasco, to answer my personal and photographic obsessions.

Le leggende, come i miti e le fiabe, traggono le loro origini dal meraviglioso. Queste storie, di tradizione orale, parlano di figure e di eventi che oltrepassano la dimensione umana e che traggono le loro origini nel sacro, l’eroico e il fantastico, definendo così un nuovo territorio. Il mondo immaginario ed invisibile di questi racconti propone allora delle risposte a quanto trascende l’intelletto e permette di dare, grazie a queste tradizioni orali, un significato all’immateriale ed allo sconosciuto, consentendo all’essere umano di sopportare quello che non lo è, come gli eventi straordinari della natura, il terrore, la morte, ecc.

Le maggiori paure sono frutto di ciò che non s’intende e non si vede; la notte, ad esempio, è da sempre un territorio misterioso popolato da terrori, eventi e creature straordinari, perché l’oscurità non solo impedisce all’uomo di percepire chiaramente la realtà delle cose, ma ne trasforma tutti i contorni. Le virtù confortanti delle leggende rendono la realtà umana più dolce e contribu- iscono a far si che le difficoltà ed il mistero dell’esistenza diventino più sopportabili ed accettabili.

Essendo originaria di Camorino, ho scelto di trattare il tema delle leggende durante la mia residenza in Valle Verzasca per capire meglio le mie origini ticinesi profonde. Mi sono lasciata sorprendere ed avvolgere dalla valle per cercare di percepire le sue particolarità. E’ mia convinzione che, reale o immaginaria che sia, è la storia che ci fa capire chi siamo e da dove veniamo. Le leggende sono per me le radici di questa tradizione orale che fa parte della nostra cultura. Insieme ai miti e alle fiabe, le leggende definiscono le credenze, le paure e le speranze di una popolazione.

Ho passeggiato in chiese vuote, nella natura selvaggia talvolta inclemente, ho ricreato il mio studio fotografico in vari musei del cantone e anche nella mia stanza di Frasco, per rispondere a queste mie ossessioni personali e fotografiche.

Olga Cafiero (b. Como, 1982) is a Swiss and Italian photographer living and working in Lausanne.
After a BA in Photography and an MA in Art Direction obtained at ECAL, she studied Art History at the Uni- versity of Lausanne. Since 2008, her works have been exhibited both in Switzerland and worldwide, and regu- larly published in international magazines. Her awards include Foam Talent (Amsterdam), Hyères Festival de Mode et de Photofographie (Hyères), BFF-Förderpreis, the Swiss Design Award as well as the Enquête Photographique Neuchâteloise 2019–2020.
