Il giardino di rocce dell’artista Oksana Yushko, un’installazione site-specific, fa riferimento alla coevoluzione della Castanea sativa e dei popoli che da tempi antichi vivono al sud della Svizzera. Gli alberi di castagno sono estremamente longevi, e perciò potrebbero ricordare agli umani della loro ancestrale collaborazione, ravvivando le memorie scomparse. I muri che circondano Castello Marcacci fanno risuonare l’eco delle parole di Remarque: “Com’è l’erba di notte, quando non la si guarda?”, che rappresentano la parte fotografica dell'installazione. Ci sono confini visibili e invisibili, creati dall’uomo, che modificano i paesaggi di tutto il mondo. Entrambe le parti dell’installazione riflettono come gli umani manipolano abitualmente la natura, costruendo strati su strati e reinquadrando la natura all’interno di muri. Alla ricerca di una pietra miliare del nuovo pensiero ecologico, l’artista abbraccia un'idea di interconnessione e invita lo spettatore ad aumentare la consapevolezza della crisi ambientale globale e a ripensare la nostra comprensione della natura.

In her site-specific rock garden installation, artist Oksana Yushko refers to the historical coevolution of Castanea sativa and people living in the south of Switzerland since ancient times. Chestnut trees live an extremely long life, and thus they could remind humans about that ancestral cooperation, refreshing vanished memories. The surrounded walls of the Marcacci castle throw back the echoes of Remarque saying - “How is the grass at night, while we are not watching?”, representing the photographic part of the installation. There are both visible and invisible boundaries, which humans create, changing landscapes around the world. Both parts of the installation reflects how humans habitually manipulate nature, building layers after layers and reframing nature within the walls. In search of a cornerstone of new ecological thinking, the artist embraces an idea of interconnectedness and invite the viewer to increase awareness of global environmental crisis and rethink our understanding of nature. 

Oksana Yushko

Oksana Yushko (Russia) is a contemporary artist, photographer, and curator, currently focusing on projects in post-Soviet countries, Europe and the Baltic Sea region. Her visual approach combines documentary, sociology, and anthropology, while her practice includes photography, video, sculpture, and installations. Yushko's research lies at the intersection of memory and post-trauma, ecology and biopolitics. Her work has been published in the media and exhibited in galleries throughout the world.
