A Curve That Warmly Fits You

I have been tracing valleys for as long as I remember, both as a kid collecting stones from the riverbanks, or searching for their remains after they perish. I wanted to see a living one and how they become long admired and feared, like a mother. In my letter to you, I wrote of water caressing stones for epochs at a time to a curve your body would intimately fit in. I show you the ways this valley inspires the feminine and masculine inside of me.

Percorro valli fin da quando ricordo; da bambino, raccogliendo pietre lungo le rive dei fiumi, e poi in cerca di ciò che resta dopo la loro scomparsa. Volevo vedere una valle viva e osservare come diventano ammirate e temute, come una madre. Nella mia lettera a te, ho scritto dell’acqua che accarezza le pietre per epoche intere, fino a formare una curva a cui il tuo corpo si adatterà perfettamente. Ti mostro i modi in cui questa valle ispira il femminile e il maschile che fanno parte di me..

Mahmoud Khattab

(ENG) Mahmoud Khattab is an independent photographer and a writer based in Cairo, Egypt. Mahmoud’s stories span over years, ob- serving change and reminiscence of hills and himself in stills and writings.
In his story, The Dog Sat Where We Parted, which was shown in Arles: Les Rencontres de la Photographie, Mahmoud narrates a year as a soldier: venturing into the desert with a dog and an individuality stripped, finding salvation in the poetry and the visual; an autoethnography.

(ITA) Mahmoud Khattab è un fotografo indipendente e scrittore con base al Cairo, Egitto. Le storie di Mahmoud spaziano attraverso anni di osservazione dei cambiamenti e dei ricordi delle colline e di sé stesso, fissati in immagini e scritti.
Nella sua storia, “The Dog Sat Where We Parted”, presentata ad Arles: Les Rencontres de la Photographie, Mahmoud narra un anno vissuto come soldato: avventurandosi nel deserto con un cane e un’identità spogliata, trovando salvezza nella poesia e nell’arte visiva; un’autoetnografia.
