As a teenager, during the eighties, I was a fan of a rock band from Geneva called Le Beau Lac de Bâle. In one particular song, the vocalists sang a chorus that I can still remember:
Le peigne, la bagnole et la montre à quartz sont les trois mamelles de l’employé modèle.
Le peigne, la bagnole et la montre à quartz du Suisse moyen sont les valeurs universelles°.
The philosopher Jacques Derrida associated hospitality to a dimension of unforeseeability. I love this idea. The notion of the unforeseeable reminds me of the fact of being exposed to something elusive. What does it mean to welcome the other? Is it possible to host someone under our roof without being upset, read transformed? A phenomenon of withdrawal is paradoxically present in our era of globalisation. How can we accommodate the refugees in this context, how can we leave them some room, if our mental space is shaken by fear and our everyday life is aimed at the preservation of our achievements?

un ritornello che mi è rimasto stampato nella memoria:
Le peigne, la bagnole et la montre à quartz sont

Il filosofo Jacques Derrida associava l’ospitalità a una dimensione di imprevedibilità. Mi piace questa idea. La nozione dell’imprevedibile mi rimanda al fatto di essere esposto a qualcosa che sfugge. Che cosa significa quindi accogliere l’altro? È possibile ricevere qualcuno nella propria casa senza esserne travolto, vedi modificato?
Un fenomeno di recesso accompagna paradossalmente la nostra era della globalizzazione. Come accogliere i rifugiati in questo contesto, come lasciare loro uno spazio, quando il nostro spazio mentale è scosso dalla paura e la nostra quotidianità rivolta alla preservazione di quello che abbiamo raggiunto?

Geneva based Christian Lutz is an award winning photographer whose work is regularly published and exhibited around the world. He studied photography in Brussels at the Ecole supérieure des Arts et de l’Image “Le 75.” Christian Lutz is the author of several books published notably by Lars Müller Publishers.
He collaborates with the agency VU’.
