The scarring is a process of reconstruction of animal or vegetal tissue after an injury, or a scar that the soul carries after a traumatic experience. The water engraves its paths on the stone and even if it stops flowing, its trajectory leaves its trace like a scar on the rock. By the traces, we can guess the past, reflect on the present and imagine the future. My immersion in the mountainous landscape, the continuous sound of the water in the valley, awakened my buried memories. The meeting with these dreamlike landscapes of Ticino, as torrential water coming from the high altitudes and flowing on stones, stories that I learned how to forget have emerged in me. My encounter with nature disturbed me to the point of feeling my way back to an imaginary world that I never knew but which is almost considered it a dream place with wild and vibrant nature. Photographs are realised in a medium format in black and white, I intend to express subjective visual and emotional atmospheres depicting a poetic journey along the Verzasca valleys rivers. I’m fascinated by the subject of perception and the borders between reality and illusions intrigue me. The use of analog photography allows me to get a close image to my perception.

La cicatrizzazione è un processo di ricostruzione del tessuto animale o vegetale dopo una ferita, o una cicatrice che l’anima porta con sé dopo un’esperienza traumatica. L’acqua incide i suoi percorsi sulla pietra e, anche se smette di scorrere, la sua traiettoria lascia una traccia come una cicatrice sulla roccia. Dalle tracce possiamo intuire il passato, riflettere sul presente e immaginare il futuro. La mia immersione nel paesaggio montuoso e il suono continuo dell’acqua nella valle hanno risvegliato i miei ricordi sepolti. L’incontro con questi paesaggi onirici del Ticino, come un’acqua torrenziale che proviene dalle alte quote e scorre sulle pietre, ha fatto emergere in me storie che ho imparato a dimenticare. Il mio incontro con la natura mi ha turbato al punto di sentirmi tornare in un mondo immaginario che non ho mai conosciuto, ma che è quasi considerato un luogo da sogno con una natura selvaggia e vibrante. Le fotografie sono realizzate in formato medio in bianco e nero; intendo esprimere atmosfere visive ed emotive soggettive, raffigurando un viaggio poetico lungo i fiumi della Valle Verzasca. Sono affascinato dal tema della percezione e mi intrigano i confini tra realtà e illusione. L’uso della fotografia analogica mi permette di ottenere un’immagine vicina alla mia percezione.

Belhassen Handous

Belhassen Handous is a Tunisian self-taught photographer and documentary filmmaker who lives and works in Tunis. He has practiced analog photography for over 20 years. His first documentary film, "Hecho en Casa," produced in 2014, is a diary of his life between Spain and Tunisia and was screened in several film festivals. "La Syncope du Mérou", his first solo exhibition, was held at Central Tunis gallery in 2021. He is currently working on his second documentary film, "On the Hill", and is a grantee of the Magnum Foundation's "Counter-Histories" initiative for his project "In the Shadows of Our Founding Father" which investigates the fall of Bourguiba's regime.
